How do thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics lower blood pressure?Clinical Pharmacology, NHLI Division, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, London, UK, a.hughes{at}imperial.ac.uk Thiazide diuretics are widely used for the treatment of hypertension, but the mechanism by which these drugs lower blood pressure in the long term remains unknown. This article reviews current knowledge about the hypotensive actions of thiazides and thiazide-like diuretics and discusses possible mechanisms of action.
